A few words on Anwesha
Anwesha first appeared in September 1998 as a quarterly magazine. It aimed to prepare ground for discussion, analysis and interaction dealing with common man’s existencial struggle against the established power structure. It tried to keep the common man in centre and not act as a mouthpiece for any particular ideology or grouping. It tried to explore various social, political, economic and cultural movements involving the common man. Anwesha moved ahead with its stated objectives till 2010, although it had started becoming irregular by the year 2008. Then it stopped publication completely between 2011 and 2016. The major reasons behind this were not getting enough quality writings in a timely manner and the involvement of the managerial-editorial team in different people’s movements leading to their inability to spare time for the magazine. Financial difficulties also played a role in its stoppage of publication.
Anwesha had a new beginning in April 2017 when the young activists of Centre for Human Sciences, Bhubaneswar, came forward to republish it. Although there were changes in the get up of the magazine in its new life, it retained the original objectives and committments. Some new sections, like photos, classics, travelogue, were now added to it. A new objective was also added – to empower Odia language to become an able medium for communication on the events, problems and crises of a changing world. On the whole, Anwesha would try to act as a forum for discussion on social sciences in the Odia language.
Publication of the magazine has continued except for the disruptions caused by cyclone Fani and the Corona virus epidemic. Anwesha does not accept advertisements as a matter of principle. It draws its sustenance from the love and co-operation of its readers and writers. It is hoped that Anwesha will continue to live if this remains steadfast.
