The Mahanadi Review
The Mahanadi Review was first published from Mahanadi Press, Cuttack, and later from Mahanadi Books, Bhubaneswar. The founder and the editor of the magazine was Prafulla Kumar Jagadeb. It was in publication between January 1978 and October 1993. But only 12 issues appeared during this period since the publication did not stick to a definite periodicity.
The magazine was presented as an English language literary quartely from Odisha. It billed itself as “An Anthology of Creative and Critical Writings”. It featured poetry, literary-criticism, story, book review etc. It highlighted a section called the ‘Orissa Corner’ which dealt with the history, culture and society of Odisha. However, the number of publications under this section is rather small. The contributors to the magazine were primarily from within India and the majority were from Odisha.
There were some special issues covering topics like: F. R. Leavis (No. 4-5, 1981), Indo-Anglican poetry, Literary Criticism (No. 6, 1979), Indian Poetry in English (No. 7, 1979-80), Accent on the Poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra (No. 16, 1986-93). The special issue on Jayanta Mahapatra was, so to say, its last breath.
The Mahanadi Review finds a special place in the history of publishing in Odisha. It was the longest running English language literary magazine published from Odisha which served to document creative writings and literary insights of the Odias writing in English. It also served to bring Odia literature to the attention of an International audience.
